Types of Fireplaces

There are many different types of fireplaces and it is important to know what kind of fireplace you have in your home.

Masonry Structure / Flue

  • Built on site

  • Generally constructed of solid masonry, block, brick or stone

  • May have masonry or steel form fireboxes

  • May have one or more flue(s) serving fireplaces, hearth appliances, furnaces, boilers, etc.

  • May transition to a listed chimney system

Factory-Built Fireplace

  • Built in a factory, installed on-site

  • Listing tags should identify the system

  • Manual must be consulted to determine applicable minimum requirements

  • Fireplaces and venting typically enclosed in combustible construction

  • Vented and terminated with listed and approved chimney systems and caps

Hearth Heating Appliance

  • Generally a listed system, but may be unlisted

  • May be freestanding or inserted in a masonry or factory built system

  • May have specified hearth/floor protection requirements and clearances

  • If inserted or connected into a masonry system or fireplace the appliance may rely on the masonry system meeting its applicable minimum required codes and standards
